Spoons And Forks

I have a confession to make. I have not let Grayson use spoons and forks because I am kinda weird about him getting super messy while he eats. He has used them but never with food he can make a mess with. But at 20 months I think it's time to get over my messy fear and let him feed himself with utensils.

This was the first time I let him use a spoon with "messy" food. He dripped a little just on the top of his jammies and for course got on his face but nothing too bad. So I thought maybe this wont be so bad.

This was the next time. I'm glad I thought to take his shirt off. He has it all over his face(hard to see but even in his eye lashes), hands covered in yogurt, all down his chest and his tray was covered.

This made me want to rethink to whole spoon and fork thing. He doesn't need to use utensils right?! I'll get over my fear...I hope...

Oh honey, your gotta let it go! I am soooooo lazy, Charlie is 100% on his own for feeding himself now. That's what bibs are for, catching the mess. And then there is the whole, wash cloth wipe down. The more independent you let them be, the easier your job gets. He'll get the hang of it, but you have to give him time to practice. I'm fine if the food goes anywhere EXCEPT his hair, ooooh that gets messy!

Yeah. I've kind of been the same way. So - I bought a couple of splat mats to go under the high chair, keep wipes for easy clean up on the table and I let her hold the spoon and also guided the spoon into her mouth until she figured out that keeping the spoon right side up is more effective for getting the food into her mouth. Practice does make perfect. But it's ok if you decide when they get to practice. :)

I was the same way with Ethan. I still am sometimes, especially when it comes to yogurt. Forks and fork food are easier though! He'll get there :)

i agree. its hard to let them feed themselves when you KNOW they will look like this when they are done lol. so cute though. looks like HE had fun with it :)
